Winter snow removal is part of keeping our community safe, connected, and moving during the winter season.

Our crews prioritize key roads, sidewalks, and public spaces first, then move into residential areas as conditions allow. After a major snowfall, our goal is to have all roads safely accessible within 72 hours, depending on weather and conditions.

Snow removal happens in stages:

First, priority roads that connect residents to schools, downtown, the hospital, and essential services
Then collector and residential roads
At the same time, crews focus on ice control and safe walking routes

Priority Plowing Routes

Winter snow plowing focuses first on keeping key roads open so residents can safely move through the community.

Our plowing priorities are:

Arterial roads that connect downtown, schools, the hospital, and essential Town services
Collector roads that carry traffic between neighbourhoods
Residential roads, once priority routes are cleared and conditions allow

Our goal is to make priority roads safely accessible as quickly as possible following snowfall events, with full road access targeted within 72 hours after significant snowfall, depending on conditions.

Sanding and Ice Control

Sanding helps improve traction and keep roads safe when ice forms or conditions become slippery.

We prioritize sanding in areas such as:

Hills and steep grades
Intersections and stopping points
High-traffic and higher-risk roadways

Sanding and ice control decisions are based on weather conditions, road safety needs, and operational priorities. Materials and timing may change depending on temperature and conditions.

Sidewalks, Walkways, and Pathways

Keeping sidewalks and pathways safe is a shared responsibility between the Town and residents.

TOWN RESPONSIBILITIES

The Town clears and treats snow and ice from:

Sidewalks near Town facilities
Parks, pathways, and public walking trails

These areas are typically cleared within 48 hours after snowfall of 5 cm or more, depending on conditions.

Resident responsibilities

Property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property.

Sidewalks must be cleared within 48 hours after snowfall ends
Snow must not be pushed onto roads or public walkways
This helps keep routes safe for pedestrians and emergency access

If sidewalks are not cleared, the Town may complete the work and recover costs from the property owner in accordance with Town bylaws.

Snow Storage and Downtown Snow Removal

Snow is managed throughout the community to maintain safe access and visibility.

In the downtown area, snow may be removed or relocated when it begins to impact traffic flow, parking, or access to businesses.

Snow windrows may also be adjusted or removed when needed to support safe movement and visibility.

All decisions are based on safety, access, and operational requirements during and after snowfall events.

Important Snow Removal Rules

These rules help keep our community safe and ensure snow removal operations run smoothly.

Snow from private property must remain on private property
Snow cannot be pushed or placed onto roads, sidewalks, or public spaces
Private snow removal contractors are not permitted to dump snow on Town property
The Town is not responsible for damage caused by private snow removal equipment or contractors
If required, the Town may clear sidewalks and recover associated costs from the property owner

These rules help ensure safe access for all residents, vehicles, and emergency services throughout the winter season.
